Call for Volunteers: Maine Tasting Center Edible Flower Garden
Volunteers are needed to help plan, plant, and maintain the edible flower and herb garden at the Maine Tasting Center. The Maine Tasting Center is a not-for-profit visitor center whose mission is to support and promote Maine food and beverage producers. The edible flowers we use on our tasting boards are great conversation starters and help us segway into deeper conversations about the incredible Maine food on the plate.Use the link below to sign up, or, for more information

March 2026 President’s Chirp:
I was hoping that Spring would be upon us…nope, Winter is stubbornly hanging on with a vengeance! Thankfully, our days getting longer is a positive. Now if I could only warm-up enough to take off the long underwear… I hope you all have tried the online “SignUpGenius” and filled the spots to the brim. Summer community gardens, library flowers, hostesses and greeters all need your commitment to make our club function. Plus, you get that snazzy hot pink volunteer vest. Who w

Yes, it's time to start thinking about our Plant Sale. This is our 35th year!!! It's our biggest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going to our scholarships and community gardens and projects. You are all expected to help in some way: donating plants, helping to pot, baking for the bake sale, helping set up or helping the day of the sale. We sell perennials, shrubs, and trees. There will be more information coming to you over the next few months. A sign up sheet will be a

Get DIRTY! March Seed Starting Workshop
The GCW General Meeting in March will be a hands-on seed starting workshop that Beth Maxwell and I will lead. March is a great time to start hot-climate vegetables and many annuals indoors. Giving these plants an early jump on the season so that they can go into your garden when the spring soil has warmed will yield strong plants and good crops. In addition, working with soil and seeds is the best way I know to defeat the winter doldrums. The club will provide seed-starting

The Benefits of Native and Heirloom Seeds
By Sherry Lyons There has been a lot of information out there about heirloom and native seeds. It seems that every day there are more and more places to buy them. But what is the reason to use them over commercially available hybrid and non-native seeds? What has prevented me from investing in them is primarily the cost. Both categories of seeds usually cost quite a bit more than commercial seeds, which already cost quite a bit anyway. I thought that if I investigated the rea

December President’s Chirp:
“Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle”-Barbara Winkler As I write this, we are about to get our first significant snowfall of the season. Yes, we can’t stop winter from coming but we can enjoy the quietness that blanket of snow brings to our landscape and hopefully to our lives. Sitting back and enjoying a warm cup of your favorite beverage along with the incoming seed catalogs…what more could a gardener want? As the holiday season is upon us,

President’s Chirpings: November 2025
“ Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.”—-Emily Bronte What is it about Autumn? The cooling temperatures, the exploding colors or the impending changes to our landscape that are in the coming weeks ahead…magical! I hope you all are enjoying this season to the fullest. Many thanks to all those who were able to help put are community gardens to bed. A few of us were able to attend the GCFM’s Fall Conference. The weather was nasty but the Snow Pond

More Than Flowers
By Canny Cahn A few months ago, I was in the parking lot at AMES TRUE VALUE in Wiscasset when a sturdy-looking Maine Man approached me, smiling. Pointing to the Garden Club of Wiscasset sticker on my truck, he asked me if I was part of the group, and I said “Yes.” He then asked me if that’s the club that maintains the garden at the Coastal Cancer Treatment Center. When I nodded, he unexpectedly teared up. “ Those gardens helped me keep it together when I was undergoing chemo

In Memory of Sandy Sarmanian 1938-2025
This picture was taken on April 21, 2016 at Sandy's Edgecomb home during a plant sale preparation event. Our long time friend and member of GCW passed away on October 14. Sandy and her husband Jack lived in Edgecomb for many years where she created many beautiful gardens. Her tireless energy was amazing! She worked on our Plant Sale for many years: donating plants, hosting potting days, and enthusiastically advising customers at the Plant Sale. She and her husband Jack mo
