The program “Terrestrial Invasive Plants of Midcoast Maine” by Louisa Crane of the Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District [see below] explained what makes a plant invasive, how to identify local problem species, and why management is essential. Lousia distinguished between weeds, non-native, and invasive plants, emphasizing that only non-native species causing ecological harm are invasive. The talk highlighted their impacts—loss of biodiversity, altered soils, and threats to native habitats—and reviewed how invasive plants spread, reproduce, and outcompete natives. She also offered guidance on prioritizing management, disposal methods, and identification of common invaders in Maine, urging members to “Plant Native” and participate in monitoring and restoration efforts.
